The Greed of Agamemnon - New Contemporary Portrait Painting

9/11/2017

This painting is part of my VISAGES collection - portraits of the emotions, motivations, or states portrayed in Homer's The Iliad. The honor, pain and fury of these 3,000 year old characters are sought out and exposed through the modern mediums of oil, latex and spray paint.

The greed of Agamemnon, latex and oil paint on canvas, 18 x 25", 2017
Elder brother of Menaleus (husband of Helen), Agamemnon is the commander of the Greek forces - a vast army made up of many different kingdoms. Several leaders, such as Achilles, feel Agamemnon behaves as their ruler, instead of as an equal. It is his treatment of Achilles, concerning the prisoner Briseis, that leads to their feud and latter's refusal to fight.
