"Wounded Centaur," latex paint on canvas, 60 x 55", 2019, private collection, Nashville, TN
This painting, a more literal depiction of myth than usual for my work, portrays a centaur - a being imagined by the ancients as a complex mirror of their more uninhibited natures. Here, the centaur is shown in a moment of weakness, wounded by perhaps another centaur or a young hero. Kneeling and falling back on himself, he still displays the brashness of his fellows.
The simple and abstract charcoal drawings below were done before, during and after the painting of the "Wounded Centaur". The theme captivated me and I wanted to explore it more from different angles and poses, capturing the unique interplay of human and horse anatomy.
