Blasphemy upon the wall
The story of Capaneus is one of arrogance and violence. After scaling the walls of Thebes during the infamous battle described in Aeschylus' drama "Seven Against Thebes", Capaneus declared none, including Zeus, could stop him. Upon the wall he was then struck by a bolt from the enraged Zeus himself, forever becoming an example of the danger of blasphemy.
This painting exists in a space of motion and contortion, inhabiting a moment that could be interpreted in numerous stages of the story.
