This drawing is from my series ULYSSES, portraying a moment from Homer's Odyssey. Some of the moments are less iconic and more intimate than typically depicted. The long wandering hero Ulysses (Latin for Odysseus) encounters the gods, drifts aimless on the sea, converses with the dead, listens as tales of his adventures are sung to him, and masquerades as a beggar in his own home. He experiences all this while deeply lamenting lost time, eager to unite with family and friends.
"[Ulysses] sprang up, seizing a discus, bigger, of heavier weight, more massive - and not by a little - than the Phaiakans used to compete with each other in throwing. Whirling around in place, he hurled it forth from his massive hand, and the stone hummed loudly, and down to the earth they cowered - those men famed for their ships, the Phaiakans, long-oar wielders - under the rush of the stone." - Homer's The Odyssey (Rodney Merrill translation)
