Philoctetes
Philoctetes - bearer of the mythic bow of Heracles, injured and marooned for a decade - through the words of Sophocles, rages at the commanders of the Greek forces that abandoned him on a desolate isle on their way to Troy. His comrades had tired of his painful cries following a dreadful serpent bite to his foot. Through trickery (and later reason), Neoptolemus and Odysseus attempt to bring the great sufferer to Troy - as it was foretold that only he and his legendary bow could turn the tide of the war. Unwilling to forgive the Greek forces, Philoctetes is only convinced once a deified Heracles appears and confirms the prophecy, as well as the promise of healing and glory.
In this large painting, the figure reaches for his foot, perhaps in comfort, perhaps in remembrance of the long suffering now gone.
