Achilles Defiled
Upon hearing the news of Patroclus' death, Achilles (in Homer's The Iliad) falls into a deep grief. Customary to the time and culture, he grasps dirt and soot from the ground, smearing it onto his face and clothes.
The scene is described in The Iliad as:
"A black cloud of grief came shrouding over Achilles. Both hands clawing the ground for soot and filth, he poured it over his head, fouled his handsome face and black ashes settled onto his fresh clean war-shirt." -Homer's The Iliad (Robert Fagles translation)
