- Hercules breaking the bonds of Prometheus II
Hercules breaking the bonds of Prometheus II
Re-visiting a theme from 2016, this version also depicts the hero Hercules (Heracles) as he rends apart the adamantine bonds holding Prometheus captive. Prometheus was bound by Might and Force as Hephaestus used his craft (quite unwillingly in Aeschylus' "Prometheus Bound") to chain the rebellious titan. There he suffered for generations until, as foretold, the hero Hercules came upon him in his travels. To his relief, Hercules slew the eagle that plagued Prometheus and tore apart the unbreakable chains.
In this painting, the hero kneels down and powerfully grasps the unseen chains in his mighty grip. His muscles knot as he prepares to pry the Olympus-crafted chains apart.
