David with the head of Goliath, latex paint on canvas, 43 x 55", 2019 In this painting, the biblical hero David holds the severed head of Goliath, following their brief and surprising battle. The theme (a long tradition in painting and sculpture) portrays a key moment in the biblical narrative, and celebrates the story of a humble shepherd overcoming a more powerful enemy with courage and precision.
Earlier in September, Lauren and I had the great opportunity to visit the "Andrea del Verrocchio: Sculptor-Painter of Renaissance Florence" exhibit at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. While there, I studied the amazing paintings, sculptures and drawings of the Italian master. I'm so thrilled to be able to share images of my work in the home of collectors. Jordan and Hayley have numerous pieces of mine and Lauren's work, and we've been dying to see them installed. We can now share beautiful photos of two of my paintings in their impressive home. This post shares the first 2 works from my recent drawing series "ACHILLEUS" featuring the Homeric hero Achilles once he's entered the battle of Troy. In a recent blog I expressed excitement in creating "painted drawings" in homage to the work of Palma Giovane. Here are the first three examples of this very fulfilling method. See them all here. Painted Drawing 1, chalk pastel and acrylic paint on canvas paper, 16 x 20", 2019
Happy to share this video of sketches made during my visit to the National Gallery of Art's exhibits "Tintoretto: Artist of Renaissance Venice" and "Drawing in Tintoretto's Venice". Amazing experience! I recently visited the "Drawing in Tintoretto's Venice" exhibit at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and was particularly entranced by the drawings of Palma Giovane (1544-1628). Giovane enhanced his chalk figure drawings with touches of oil paint. This approach has inspired me to combine some of my own figure drawings with a touch of paint. Examples to come.
